When in doubt, baking soda, white vinegar and hot water will solve just about any problem you may be experiencing. Really. Amazing.

If you are ever lucky enough to go to El Mansour, order the chicken with honey and prunes. It's really good.

And Batman Begins was much better than I expected. Getting there late and having to sit almost in the front seat made it that much more exciting, letmetellyou.

Ever have one of those days when you can't say anything right? I've managed alright with my co-workers and on the phone, but I suck in email. I keep wanting to just inform people of stuff, but when I re-read the emails I'm sending out, I sound rather bitchy. Thing is, I don't know how to lighten the bitchiness and sound normal and offhand. What's more, I can't tell if it's my perception or if I'm really coming across like this. I'm not even trying humor!! I know I'd be doomed if I tried to crack a joke. Then everyone would hate me.

How's your Friday rolling along?

Thursday, July 28

Ok, I admit it. I have given up on putting up photos on this website altogether. Instead, I'm putting them up at flickr. In fact, I just spent about 2 hours going through all 900+ of them and making sure they're all organized. Please make the most of my efforts. Head on over and make some comments. It'd make my week :) Thanks!!

Speaking of flickr, it's my new form of entertainment at work. I don't even read blogs much anymore. I just page through photos. I'm not much for photo memes, but Do Your Worst had me giggling most of the morning... I think because I know most of those doing the posing.

And do you need an ego boost? Try heading over to the casting call for PotC I and II and try to get thrown out. It could backfire if they keep you, but how likely is that??

I love sushi.

Everyone thinks tall ceilings are great, which they are ... till you have to change the battery in the smoke detector.

Monday, July 25

Well, after a fantastic weekend, I'm not feeling so sorry for myself anymore, although the hormones continue to rage. An expected monthly event is now about 3 weeks overdue - don't worry, it's not due to the 'regular' reason (can you imagine me as a Holy Mother figure?? Me neither). Since the delay doesn't portend the phrase 'eating for 2', the only real problem I'm having is that the hormonal stage that preceeds the monthly event has been extended, resulting in feelings of self-pity, irrational irritation, posts like the previous one, and flaking on friends ... for 3 FRIGGIN' WEEKS!

I managed to push all that to the side this weekend, though. I was productive on Friday night to the extent that I made a list of Things to Take to an Island, which included, in no particular order:

lip stuff
camera (with backup battery)
phone (charged)
sweatshirt
water
bananas
sandwich
sweater
hat
sunscreen
gum
bread
cheese
sausage

I also mapped everything out, and made notes of important times (such as when we had to be back to the ferry for the *1* trip it made back to Oakland).

Saturday found me getting up only an hour later than I usually get up to go to work :(, but I made it to the ferry building on time, with everything checked off my list and in my backpack. Lucia and Larry joined me and we headed off to San Francisco.

In SF, we changed ferries and met up with Willo, May, and lots of other neat people and set out for Angel Island. After 12 years in the Bay area, I finally set foot on Angel Island!! We had a great time, and I came back with a sunburn to be proud of. ALSO, we skipped the ferry back to Oakland altogether and caught a ride with some of Lucia's friends on their very own personal boat. It was lovely. And I *so* didn't need either the sweater or the sweatshirt that I lugged around all day.

That night I drove to supa hot Gilroy to hang out with my brother and his family. Lily was charming, as always, even though she was cranky from being woken up from a post-swimming nap so that we could eat. I stayed the night and got to see my brother play baseball for the first time in years - it was fun!

I escaped the 100 degree heat to come back and see The Wedding Crashers. If you feel you must see this in the theater, go to a matinee. And if you can get someone else to buy your ticket, even better. It was funny, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't worth much money, like, anything over $5.

And last night I ventured into the City to meet up with Dinah at Talullah. It was very nice and soothing given my weekend, but entirely too expensive. I didn't realize that those tiny Cokes I was blithely ordering were $3 each. I'm sure I'll go again, but I'll order water and share the cheese plate.

Now I'm back and work and happy about it - at least it's air conditioned here.

Life update, with the understanding that I'm hormonal and feeling sorry for myself right now:

I should be sitting in traffic on the Bay Bridge, heading into the City to watch a very good friend perform in a cool venue in about 20 minutes. But I can't seem to make myself get back in my car just yet. Maybe tomorrow. Sorry, Jem. At 3 p.m. today, I had every intention of seeing you tonight. I'll make the next show. Promise.

Does anyone read this site any more? I don't check my referrers much, since the script I was using to have it display on this page started popping up ads every time I moused over it. I know the guy running the service has to make money back somehow, but gosh. In any case, I have a vague sense that 99.9% those visiting here are here for the random search queries, running along the same themes as always: sexy librarians, the Olsen twins, and party chicks.

My brother called to tell me he's coming up to the Bay area tomorrow. Unfortunately, he told me this after I made plans to be at Angel Island all day. But I'll get to see Lily all the same (and her parents!!), even if it's only for a few hours, so all is not lost. But that's a lot of driving, since "Bay Area" covers a huge amount of ground, and they'll be staying about 70 miles away from Oakland.

I was in Dallas last weekend. Got to see my dad and his wife, his stepson from his second marriage, who brought his family, and a bunch of DFW bloggers. A fun time was had by all, as well as a lot of food. In other news, I usually scorn air conditioning, but I tell you what, we spent a whole lotta time inside the house/mall/theater while I was there. I didn't even pretend to try to acclimate. It just don't get that hot 'round here.

My neighbor has a group of girlfriends, one of whom has a cute daughter, and they get together every once in a while and sound like they're having a great time. Why don't I have friends like that? For my group of friends to get together, it seems to take a huge effort to get everyone's schedules together, because everyone is too busy. SEVERAL HOURS LATER (count, 6): I wish they weren't having such a good time, 'cause the constant screaming and screeching of 5 women and a toddler having a good time is getting way old.

So the printer in our office has developed a squeak. I knew I was sensitive to sounds, but I didn't realize that something could get under my skin and drive me up the frickin' wall while others couldn't hear it even after I pointed it out to them. In any case, between the screeching printer and a dumbass call that just wouldn't go right, 2:59 p.m. today found me on the verge of tears. My boss even offered to let me go home early. Just the offer made me feel better and I dried my weepy tears. I like my boss.

There's more, but I have to be at the Oakland Ferry building at the ungodly hour of 9 a.m. tomorrow (it's midnight now).

Hope y'all are doing well!

Oh! And? My home computer won't boot up any more, and no, I haven't backed anything up. I exaggerate - I can boot it up in safe mode, which is fairly useless, but at least I can play Solitaire, Solitaire that takes up the entire screen!!

So, home access will be limited for some time, till I can entice some nice computer person to come over and fix it for me. Or till I get an external hard drive, back it all up, and then wipe it clean as a ... what? what is so clean these days? Hm. I'm loopy. I'm leaving. Have a nice weekend y'all!

So, I've been a little busy lately:

Last week, went to the opera in SF on Tuesday, Chris Isaak in Saratoga on Wednesday, out with co-workers in Piedmont on Thursday (drinking black tea and eating lots of sugar, so bedtime was well past midnight), in bed at 5:30 p.m. on Friday night from the exhaustion, closed the bars Saturday night, and stayed home and was domestic and antisocial on Sunday.

Monday I watched Grease and ate lots of ice cream with Jane and Lucia, Tuesday went to dinner with Gera, and saw The Fantastic 4 last night with some co-working friends. Tonight I pack so that tomorrow I can get up at 3 a.m. (does that count as part of today, or is that officially tomorrow?) and get on a plane headed for Dallas. We'll be seeing Movin' On tomorrow night, having a big bbq with the DFW bloggers, et al Saturday night, and doing something involving lots of food and maybe some air conditioning on Sunday night.

I have no plans for next week. Yet.

Monday, July 11

For the first time in a looooong time, 1) I am without evites and 2) I'm happy about it. I know #1 will change tomorrow, and I'll be happy for that event, but I've been a little busy lately and can use the rest w/o anticipation.

How is your summer going?

We've had a bunch of problems with pit bulls lately here in sunny (ha!) California, which is sad, as I understand that with the right training, they can be very sweet and nonviolent pets. Unfortunately, there are lots of people who think it's really cool to have a pit bull but don't want to take the time/effort/care to train them appropriately, or recognize that they are animals and should be treated accordingly, and so people get hurt. Really really badly hurt. And when that happens, and when it happens alot, the poor things end up in the pound by the loads.

In these times of baddogphobia, if you have a dog with a vicious reputation that you have taken the time to train and socialize, you might want to look into Invisible Breed Products™. You can dress your Dobermann as a poodle. Everyone *ahem*likes*ahem* poodles, right? [via Jessa]

Monday, July 4

A recurring theme this weekend has been something like this:

[12:35] FriendIM: so, what are you up to today?
[12:35] Me: I don't have any plans. you?
[12:36] FriendIM: want to {insert plan ideas here}?
[12:36] Me: sure. I need to get ready ... still in pjs. be there in a while.
[12:37] FriendIM: *laughing at you 'cause you're lame* ok.

Except that no one wrote to me yesterday, and I only left my apartment once, to go next door and get some bagels so I wouldn't have to get out of my pjs this morning to get breakfast.

I hope y'all are having a much more exciting (yet still safe!) 4th of July weekend.

Saturday, July 2

For my reference: Oakland events and Old Oakland Outdoor Cinema and stuff at Jack London Square.

Comment from a customer, with which we can only agree:
Sorry ... but I'm me, I can't help it.
I'd make it my tagline, but I like the soap opera/carnival one too much to replace it right now.
